1. What Margen is

Margen is a Chrome extension and SaaS product that provides AI editorial feedback inside Google Docs. Our single purpose is AI editing and review inside Google Docs.

2. What data we collect

Account data

When you sign up, we collect your email address and name via Google OAuth. We use this to identify your account and manage your subscription.

Document text

When you request a review, the text of your document (or the selected portion) is sent to our backend and then to an LLM provider (OpenAI by default) to generate feedback. We do not store full document text by default. We store only review metadata (document title, review type, comment count) and the comment text generated by the AI.

If you enable full review history, we store the comment text and metadata for your review sessions. We do not store the full document text even in this mode.

Usage data

We track usage counts (comments created, suggestions created, Q&A messages) to enforce plan limits. We do not sell this data.

Extension preferences

The Chrome extension stores your preferences (review tone, intensity, persona, model, and toolbar preferences) in Chrome's local and sync storage. These are not transmitted to our servers except as part of review requests.

3. How we use your data

• To provide the Margen service
• To enforce plan limits and manage billing
• To improve the product (aggregated, anonymized analytics only)
• To send transactional emails (receipts, account notices)

4. Limited use disclosure

Margen's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Specifically: we do not use Google user data to develop, improve, or train generalized AI or ML models. We do not sell Google user data. We do not use Google user data for advertising purposes.

5. Data sharing

We share document text with OpenAI (or your selected LLM provider) solely to generate editorial feedback. We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not share your data with advertisers.

We use Stripe for billing. Stripe processes payment information directly and we do not store credit card data.

We use Firebase (Google Cloud) for database hosting and authentication. Your data is stored in Firebase Firestore with secure access rules.

6. Data retention

We retain your account data as long as your account is active. Review metadata is retained for 12 months by default. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account dashboard.

7. Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS. We use Firebase security rules to ensure users can only access their own data. We do not store LLM API keys in the extension.

8. Your rights

You can request a copy of your data, correction of inaccurate data, or deletion of your account by contacting us at privacy@margen.dalmo.ai.
